I was very, very honored and excited to discover today that my piece "Dear John" was accepted into the Richmond Illustrators Club 4th Annual Juried Show. The work will be on display among many Illustrator's work whom I love and admire. The show opens June 3rd from 7-10pm at Ghostprint Gallery in Richmond, VA, and runs through June 25th.

"Chef Cupboard"

This is a recently finished body of work that was created on the face of an antique cupboard. There are eight chefs of different nationalities painted in acrylic with oil washes on the facing panels of the four doors of the cupboard.

Here Is a Poster I have completed for this month's "Listening Room" Sponsored by the Richmond Scene. The only requirements for the image were a bird and a gramophone. I had a lot of fun on this project. I still plan to rescan it better to capture the true colors of the piece (the original is less orange) and to tweak a few things namely to recreate the type on the right hand side by hand. I had a lot of fun researching the Muses and I was inspired by Willy Pogany as far as the stylization of them.

Here is a quick dip pen drawing I did for a good friend of mine for his birthday. He is a huge Star Wars fan so I thought I would bring him a little deeper into his passion. This piece was intended as a personal gift otherwise I would have not worked from a photo of Han Solo so directly for the pose.

Happy Mothers day! I made these card for the mothers in my life. If you are one of them they are on your way and sorry that the surprise has been ruined.
I had a wonderful "happy-accident" during my process. I made the ever obvious mistake of carving the linoleum without compensating for the fact that the final print would be in reverse. After a mixture of laughter and tears I finished carving any way and decided to print the image backwards on Graffix Trace Vellum a heavy duty nice transparent drafting vellum. Then I cut corner slots in the cards made from BFK Cream paper and slid the vellum in with the printed side towards the card so the image is viewed correctly through the transparency.
Its wonderful when "mistakes" work.

This is a photo of a large commission I just completed. It is oil on stretched canvas over a cradled wood panel. The painting is 3 and a half by 4 feet. I learned a lot through the process of working on this piece. My goal was to have a strong reminiscent feeling. I worked from a photo from 1967 of a son and his father playing football.

Here is the last painting for the four week advent sermon series at Redemption Hill. This painting is for the song sung by Simeon in Luke who sings after he sees Christ at His circumcision. It was promised to Simeon that he would see Christ before he died.

It has been a while.

Here is a quick Illustration I finished for the Advent sermon series at my church Redemption Hill. The series Is titled Songs of the Story and it is 4 weeks long with each week focusing on a different one of the songs surrounding the birth of Christ. The first one is sung by Mary, the second is Zechariah, the Third was Angels, and the fourth was Simeon. I am going to do a different painting for each week to be presented on the slides and the website. I am pretty excited about doing this.

Here Is a piece I finished for the Visual Literacy Program monthly contest. The figure is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The author of Sherlock Holmes). The challenge of the contest was to pick two different ways of working or focuses and combine them together. I chose line and a painterly application of media.
I was honored and grateful to receive third place in the contest.

"Emergent"

Sterling Clinton Hundley's debut gallery show "emergent" was truely amazing. I was privileged to attend the pre-opening viewing, the official opening night during Richmond's "First Friday" art walk, and again the next day to view the work again without the crowd. You would think i have seen it all but not so. I plan on seeing it at least one more time before it comes down. Artist Francis Vallejo drove up from Florida to see the show and stayed with myself and my roommate artist William Godwin. The three of us were later invited to Sterling Hundley's house and studio which continued to blow our minds. That evening with those incredible artists and solid men was one i will absolutely never forget. Those 3 days surrounding Sterling's show acted as a surge of inspiration and much needed re-energizing towards picture making. It was a similar reaction to when i just returned home from the academy. Kind of an art high that I plan to exploit to the enth degree.

It was primarily a experimental exercise for me and a chance to give a much more personal present. Once I get a better scan of the final I will put it up. I am now established in my new studio with some work already coming in. I am really exited. With the liveliness of life comes new posts! Here is some work from Sketchbook#5 which I had been working on since spring break of my senior year and finished halfway through the academy. I have noticed already the jump of quality from what I am posting now and my current sketchbook which is almost completed and will be posted soon. More than the "quality" of my drawing I am excited about the "Progression" of the quality of my drawing. When the improvement is visible life is good. Cheerio for now.

Home from Academy

Just returned a few days from the Illustration Academy. It was hands-down the best experience of my life relating to my love and pursuit of picture making. It truely is bitter-sweet being back. In just 7 weeks complete strangers became the closest of friends. You are all missed Student and Instructor alike. Its as if I just returned from an long family reunion.
Now that I am back in Richmond I am focusing my energies the next few days on my apartment move. Shifting to an apartment that allows for much more studio space. I will still be living with good friend and Illustrator William Godwin. As soon as I am settled posts will begin to explode with sketchbook updates and work from the Academy. Hey guys, Im at the illustration Academy still and working hard. Ed Kinsella has just arrived. Im pretty excited. Robin Eley got here just the other day. So much talent in one small place.

I just finished my first Post-School project. It is a movie poster for a local richmond film "Shadow Games" written and directed by Jim Ed Wills. The movie premiers in Richmond VA at the Byrd theatre August 8th at 1:00pm! Please go and support the film! I even play a character in it!
With this poster I painted it with acrylics and ink. I got to play with digital washes for the first time. It works well and looks good but not nearly as fun as washes by hand... but efficient.

Now I have to work hard and catch up on our current assignment given to us by Chris Payne. His assignment is to illustrate a conversation. Its going to be lots of fun.

Lecture week just ended today.. .and what an incredible week it was! I learned from all of these incredible people, more than I can recall in any fathomable time. It is an incredible honor. I have realized how much of an honor i have had the past year or so to learn hands on from two of these guys, Sterling Hundley and Robert Meganck in classes at VCU. I dont ever want to take that AMAZING experience for granted.

I will post the work ive been doing as soon as i can. Im working on a poster for a local richmond film Shadow Games with all the time I have right now.

Every Tuesday and Thursday night we have figure drawing sessions with the instructors using NuPastels to quickly capture the gestures and the light on the form.
I am having a blast for the next 7 weeks at the Illustration Academy in Sarasota Florida at Ringling College of Art and Design. Its the fourth day and its easily the four most incredible days of my artistic career. We just watched John Foster give an oil painting demo... MAN! I am loving every moment and we've barely gotten our feet wet. John English, George Pratt, Doug Chayka, and Brent Watkinson are all here blowing my mind and more incredible Illustrators are soon to come such as Gary Kelly, Mark English, Anita Kunz, Robert Meganck, Sam Webber, and Barron Storey. So exited.

This is a piece that was done for a class taught by both Robert Meganck and Sterling Hundley. In the class we went through a very odd book called Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino. The book was good for the class because each chapter was completely different and had very little explained imagery to latch on. The assignments were to illustrate several of the different chapters.This is an illustration for the chapter "All at One Point".

My new sketchbook is also by Global Art Materials Inc. It is their nice brown leather model 5" x 7". I am enjoying it so far. This sketchbook I am trying to focus a lot on my line work as well as just continuing experimenting.

I recently finished filling up a red landscape "Hand Book" from Global Art Materials, Inc. I really enjoyed the sketchbook. It was a nice break from the standard black Moleskine's especially in that the paper was rougher and more receptive to wet mediums. This was my second "Hand Book".
